Fresh from the orchards in Konkan
Alphonso/Hapus is unlike any other type of mango. It’s not called the king of mangoes for no reason. It is the most exotic variety of mango. Its distinct taste is unforgettable, the color is a heavenly golden yellow, and the shape is unique.
While its original home is the Devgad and Ratnagiri regions of Konkan, the variety is also grown in other parts of Maharashtra and some parts of Gujarat, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh.
The orchards are within 200-500 meters (600-1500 feet) from the Arabian sea. The direct sea winds, the hot and humid climate, and ample sunlight are conducive to the growth of the fruits and give them a unique taste.
A fully grown mango tree will start flowering from January, small green fruits start appearing in February and they start ripening to sweet and delicious mangoes by March/April as the summer sets in the south and western India.
The cuckoos prefer to hide in the lush green leaves of the mango tree. As summer sets in, the melodious call of the cuckoo is a reminder of the heavenly mangoes growing on the tree.
It takes between three and five years for a mango tree to start bearing fruits. A well-cared tree will give fruits for about 50 years!
